"Though the process of abstraction has been defined as "a process of
extracting pure or essential forms, emptying a space of its concrete
contents," Stevens uses it as that from which she would extract reality.
Rather than emptying space, Stevens is filling it. Rather than erasing the
presence of things, Stevens is indeed drawing them forth.

"The visual restlessness and the emotive quiet are, in fact, qualities
which are to be found in all of Stevens' works no matter how different they
are in other respects. Her achievement is in the balancing of those
qualities: the sense of quiet with the absence of a defined centre."

John Murchie. "The Observer's Eye, The Limit of Perception."
