Spectra
Artist’s Statement:
Three separate but connected groups of artwork pay homage to the power of colour.
1. In seven watercolors, I return to the traditional still-life genre, where each painting focuses on one colour. Rich ripe fruit is arranged with decorative tablecloths, glass and china in corresponding hues.
2. Revisiting the captured light and colour of the Impressionists, and reassessing the formal qualities of abstraction, several large acrylic paintings have sculptural elements, creating shadows and a changing surface tension.
3. Bridging representation and abstraction are seven small relief structures, each charged with one colour varying in tone and intensity, highlighting the symbolic and emotional qualities of the spectrum. The experience of a life lived is the source of my art while light and colour have been my inspiration, ideas transfigured into the magic of spectra.
